What Is A Strong Password?

Protect your data better...

A strong password is crucial for protecting your online accounts and personal information from unauthorized access. A strong password typically includes the following characteristics:

Password Length
The longer a password, the better. Aim for at least 12 to 16 characters.

Password Complexity
Use a mix of letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and special characters (such as !, @, #, $, etc.) to increase complexity.

Variety
Avoid using easily guessable information such as personal details (names, birthdays, addresses, etc.), common words, or simple patterns (like "12345" or "password").

Uniqeness
Each of your accounts should have a unique password. Reusing passwords across multiple sites increases the risk of more than one account being infiltrated when only one site is compromised.

Randomness
Randomly generated passwords are often stronger than passwords created by users, as they avoid common words or patterns.

A significant number of people still use simple and easily guessable passwords, despite widespread advice to the contrary from cybersecurity experts. Reports and studies on data breaches often reveal that passwords like "123456", "password", "admin", and "qwerty" remain incredibly common.

It's also recommended to use a password manager (available with most popular web browsers and as a standalone app) to generate, store, and manage your passwords. Sometimes spreadsheets are used when there are more than 20 or 30 passwords that need to be maintained. Password managers and spreadsheets allow you to have complex, unique passwords for each of your accounts without the need to memorize them all.

Strong passwords are becoming more and more important. They are a foundational element of digital security, acting as the first line of defense against numerous online threats.
